Hey all, I’m back with another animated film from the late ‘90s for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s Anastasia.

Plot: This is an animated fantasy retelling of the story of Anastasia, the last Grand Duchess of Russia. Honestly it’s a fun film, but it’s not at all accurate to history, though you can likely guess that given how Rasputin is an evil sorcerer in this film’s opening. The film’s plot isn’t that amazing and pretty predictable, but I enjoyed it when I was a kid.

Casting: Meg Ryan voices the main character Anya, though there are some standouts who had supporting roles like Kirsten Dunst of Spider-Man fame who voices a young Anastasia.

Cinematography: Being all animation, this film wasn’t super amazing, but it was notably the first animated film to be produced in-house by 20th Century Fox.

Music: It fits the movie, and though the song parts aren’t bad, they aren’t nearly as memorable as some other films from Fox’s main competitor Disney.

Overall: A fun but highly inaccurate and sadly predictable retelling of the story of Anastasia.

For those who like: Fantasy, History, Drama, Action, and 90’s Animation Films.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
