Creating Game Characters with Simple Shapes in Inkscape

Inkscape Video tutorial

These tutorials are based on social media questions about flat game characters using seemingly simple shapes. Can something like this be done in Inkscape? Of course! Inkscape is more than capable to do it [or any other vector design tool out there]. I create a small set of shapes that I might need to create simple game art characters. They should be easy to separate, export, animate, and reuse for future additions and variations.
A circle, a rounded corner rectangle, a pill shape, and a line are all it takes to quickly create a medieval knight. As usual, I am having way too much fun with it and end up with a whole page of characters.

In the second video, I take the knight and turn him into a scifi/ Starwars-inspired Mandalorian and some stormtroopers. Not surprisingly, I have way too much fun again… and had to force myself to stop [for now ;) ].

In this second video, I want to show you the flexibility and strength of vector designs. It’s extremely easy to change a design into something very different in a short time and with the same elements. I take the knight from the first video and create three Starwars-inspired fanart game characters with it. In the end, the medieval knight turns into a Mandalorian and two stormtroopers – and all that, in less than 45 minutes.

As usual, I hope you enjoyed the tutorial. I enjoyed doing these little characters in Inkscape and will continue to play with them. There will be a video on exporting and animating them [soon-ish].
