What’s One Game Mechanic You Think Is Underused — and How Would You Bring It Back?

GameDev.Net

I've been thinking a lot about mechanics that were awesome in one or two games but somehow never caught on. For example, the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor was brilliant but rarely replicated. Or time manipulation in Braid and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time — such great potential, yet not widely adopted. What’s one gameplay mechanic you feel deserves more love?

Temporal tricks and narrative turns in Kaleidoscube’s time-bending adventure Recur

PreMortem.Games

In Recur , when the world ends, or at least when the apocalypse begins, an ordinary postman discovers an extraordinary new ability. He suddenly gains the power to bend time to his will. By moving forward, time resumes its natural flow and events unfold as normal (though ‘normal’ is relative in an end-of-the-world scenario of course). Standing still brings everything to a halt, every city-shattering explosion, every derailing train, every collapsing scaffold freezes in mid-air, suspended in time

Rapid Optimization with Vibe Coding

GameDev.Net

Recently, while working on our game Wind Rider for Meta Quest devices in Unity, we've started using a workflow often referred to as "vibe coding." If you haven't heard this term yet, vibe coding is basically programming heavily assisted by Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or, in our case, GitHub Copilot integrated into VS Code. This AI-driven method has noticeably sped up how quickly we can produce content, especially when it comes to editor tooling.

Looming Xbox layoffs threaten Microsoft's reputation on acquisitions | Opinion

GamesIndustry.biz

The games industry has seen round after crushing round of layoffs over the past few years – a consequence largely of an over-extended industry recoiling from dramatically higher interest rates, though some terrible strategic decisions and even some fairly misguided notions about the likely productivity impacts of generative AI have also played a role in some cases.

Building Smooth Virtual Joystick Input for iOS Games: Lessons from the Trenches

GameDev.Net

When developing mobile games, touch-based joystick input can often feel either too rigid or overly sensitive. Especially in action games or fast-paced experiences, delivering responsive and fluid controls is critical for engagement. In this post, I’ll share the approach we used while working on an iOS game project—how we handled touch input, built a virtual joystick, and made movement feel polished.

Godot 3.6 was released in September last year, and it has been mostly stable, although there have been a few more important bugs which warrant a maintenance “patch” release (3.6.x). As well as bug fixes, this release also contains some cherry-picks from 4.x to update libraries. Let us know if you spot any regressions. Jump to the Downloads section. As someone who has worked on iOS games using both native Swift and Unity, I’ve been thinking more about how much the underlying tech stack impacts game design decisions. I feel a lot more capable with the video editing tool now, and sometimes I even have a little fun when making videos.
