Retro Game Friday: Xevious

Game Industry News

Hey all I’m back with another very classic game for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Xevious! Plot: This game really didn’t have a plot other than destroy enemy forces, called Xevious, trying to take over Earth. Gameplay: The gameplay was simple, don’t get hit by the enemy projectiles or their ships while destroying as many ships and other targets as you can.

those who can, do. those who can’t, do podcasts

The Art of the Game

So as I count down the microseconds until the kids are back in school (and dreading that Delta variant will close everything up again) I’ve been doing a lot of interviews online lately. First up: I love the fireside chat format – especially when my energy plays off the person I’m talking to. I have to admit, I was super tired and had a couple of ales which carbo-wired me, so I feel like I came off as a totally spastic geek.

EXR: Zstandard compression

The Astronauts

In the previous blog post I looked at OpenEXR Zip compression level settings. Now, Zip compression algorithm (DEFLATE) has one good thing going for it: it’s everywhere. However, it is also from the year 1993, and both the compression algorithm world and the hardware has moved on quite a bit since then :) These days, if one were to look for a good, general purpose, freely available lossless compression algorithm, the answer seems to be either Zstandard or LZ4, both by Yann Collet.

Dev snapshot: Godot 3.4 beta 3

Mircosoft Game Dev

The upcoming Godot 3.4 release will provide a number of new features which have been backported from the 4.0 development branch (see our release policy for details on the various Godot versions). We had a beta 2 build ten days ago , and a number of issues have since been found and fixed, so it's time for Godot 3.4 beta 3. If you already reviewed the changelog for the previous beta, you can skip right to the differences between beta 2 and beta 3.

EXR: Zip compression levels

The Astronauts

Update 2021 October: default zip compression level was switched from 6 to 4, for OpenEXR 3.2 (see PR). Yay faster zipped exr writing, soon! In the previous blog post I looked at lossless compression options that are available in OpenEXR. The Zip compression in OpenEXR is just the standard DEFLATE algorithm as used by Zip, gzip, PNG and others. That got me thinking - the compression has different “compression levels” that control ratio vs.

Release candidate: Godot 3.3.3 RC 1

Mircosoft Game Dev

While we're busy working on both the upcoming Godot 4.0 and 3.4 releases (with a dev snapshot for 3.4 beta 2 available now), we still cherry-pick important bug fixes to the 3.3 branch regularly for maintenance releases (see our release policy ). Godot 3.3.2 was released in May, and a number of useful fixes have been queued in the 3.3 branch since then, so now's a good time to push them in production.

Movie Monday: Casper

Game Industry News

Hey all I’m back with a movie made over 25 years ago for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s Casper! Plot: The plot of this film is pretty family friendly. The basic premise is as follows, an amnesiac ghost of a young boy befriends the daughter of a recent widower, who also is a paranormal therapist. Frankly there are some pretty dark parts to the movie, though I won’t go into specifics because it’s pretty spoilerific and this isn’t one of those must-see films so there’s a pretty good chance you have

How the Coen Brothers brought up absurdity in cinema

Filmustage

What is absurdity and how does it appear in movies? Is it a cinematic device, and if so, for what purposes do directors use it? We will try to answer these questions in today's blog, which will be dedicated to the directorial duo of Joel and Ethan Coen. There is one very good reason why the Coen brothers are the heroes of this week: they are, you might say, the chameleons of the cinematic world.

EXR: Lossless Compression

The Astronauts

One thing led to another, and I happened to be looking at various lossless compression options available in OpenEXR image file format. EXR has several lossless compression options, and most of the available material (e.g. “Technical Introduction to OpenEXR” and others) basically end up saying: Zip compression is slow to write, but fast to read; whereas PIZ compression is faster to write, but slower to read than Zip.

Old World Designer Notes #2: City Sites

Designer Notes

The following is an excerpt from the Designer Notes for Old World. The game, a historical 4X set in classical antiquity, released on July 1, 2021, and is available for purchase here. One challenge that has haunted all Civilization games since the beginning is Infinite City Sleaze (ICS). In the original version, one player discovered that the optimum strategy was to cover every fourth tile on the board with a city, a mind-numbingly boring strategy that was always the best choice.

Battle Lines: Opaka’s Calling

Game Industry News

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS! “ Battle Lines ” does not tread new ground for either Star Trek or science fiction in general, but it does highlight the ways in which DS9 differs from TNG. “Battle Lines” feels very much like an early TNG script right up until the final scene when Camille Saviola lets us see Opaka’s unflappable demeanor fall away. DS9 lives best in this odd space between anxiety and resolve, unlike its predecessor series, and “Battle Lines” reminds us of same.

Destigmatising Mistakes: A Game Launch Incident Review

Sky Betting and Gaming Technology

We don’t often talk about the mistakes we make, whether that’s because we feel guilty, ashamed, scared, or something else. So I thought it would be nice to share the one we (GES) made and what we learned from it. Hopefully, this will help reduce the pressure/stigma of making a mistake. So grab a brew and let me tell you a story…. What do GES do? GES are responsible for launching games, primarily on Vegas and Bingo Arcade.

Moving on to “ The Storyteller ,” this episode pretends to say things about the stories we tell ourselves and each other in order to function in a greater society. For O’Brien, he gets wrapped up in a long-standing myth designed to create unity where there was division.
