2023 is set to be a great gaming year for the Nintendo Switch. In terms of game releases, this year has some amazing sequels and some new franchises being released and frankly, I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Here are the best Nintendo Switch games to keep an eye out for in 2023, including some of the games announced at Nintendo Direct.
There are some great games on the list, including arguably the most anticipated game of the year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (it was called Breath of the Wild 2 when it was first announced). I can’t wait for this one, I’ve already bought this one (via pre-order)!

Best Nintendo Switch Games 2023
In the following list you will find some well-known AAA games as well as some great looking mini games from new indie developers. It doesn’t matter what type of genre you play, you’ll find something for you below:

At the Nintendo Direct event, which took place on February 8, 2023, many different games were announced. Some of them are not included in this article, because I don’t think they’re worth being included on my list. But, you can always check the official site for more info.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Release Date: 12th May 2023
I loved Breath of the Wild, one of the best games of all time. I’m not alone in that, as the game averages 97/100 on Metacritic. What about the sequel?
Initially announced as Breath of the Wild 2, but later renamed Tears of the Kingdom, the game is the most anticipated Nintendo Switch game of 2023. Everyone may have a personal favourite, but that’s the general opinion among Switch fans.
The game, which will be released on May 12, 2023, is being sold with a price tag of $70. That’s a bit expensive, but I’m looking forward to jumping into the huge open world and seeing if it’s worth the asking price.

DecaPolice
Release Date: 2023
You know Nintendo loves games that look comical and epic at the same time. DecaPolice, developed by studio Level-5, is one of them. What interests me is the game mechanics and not necessarily the graphics and overall art style.
At the moment there is no detailed information, but we know a few things from the trailer and the story. In the game we’ll play a detective with supernatural powers. These powers allow us to catch criminals in a world that is different from reality.
In DecaPolice there are many different types of enemies, creatures, different weapons like bows and arrows and all the mechanics you expect from a J-RPG. The exact release date isn’t yet known, but it’ll be released sometime in 2023.
Disney Illusion Island
Release Date: 28th July 2023
I don’t know about you, but I love Mickey Mouse and all things Disney. So I was pretty excited when this game was first announced last year. Luckily, we now know the release date, once it’s out you’ll be able to pick this game up from the Nintendo Store or Amazon.
Disney Illusion Island is a platform game that looks pretty cool. You can play the game with Mickey and his friends in co-op mode with up to four people. Your goal is to collect the three books you need that’ll enable you to save the world.
Illusion Island Is set to be released on 28 July 2023, it’s a Nintendo Switch exclusive..
You can choose between Mickey, Minnie, Donald or Goofy. Also… Characters heal each other by hugging. How cute is that?
Sea of Stars
Release Date: 29th August 2023
Do you know Chrono Trigger, which has redefined the RPG genre since its debut in 1995? It’s okay if you don’t, because Sea of Stars is a brand new game that stays true to the genre and will be released on 29 August 2023.
With its freely explorable world, turn-based battle system, genre-typical graphics style and possibly a great story, it’s one of the games I’ve been most waiting for this year.
According to the official Nintendo website, Sea of Stars tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic. This is the only known force capable of fighting off the monstrous creations of an evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.
Bayonetta Origins
Release Date: 17th March 2023
If you enjoyed Bayonetta 3, which is a Nintendo Switch exclusive, (I don’t see why you wouldn’t), you’re going to love this game designed in storybook form. How do I know this? I’ve kept my eye on videos being posted online, it looks epic.
As I mentioned, Bayonetta Origins is a storybook game, which is in reference to it’s art style. It doesn’t have many elements from the other games in the franchise. It quietly tells its own story – through two characters, Cereza and Cheshire.
The most interesting thing about the game, which will be released on 17 March 2023, is the control mechanics. We’ll have to control two characters at the same time, using both joy-cons, which seems quite difficult but at the same time, I’m excited to give it a try.
Harmony: The Fall of Reverie
Release Date: Harmony: The Fall of Reverie
Do the games Life is Stranger or Tell Me Why sound familiar? Don’t Nod, the developer of these two unique games, is looking for a new adventure. And believe me – what I’ve seen so far is enough for me to say that Harmony: The Fall of Reverie will be a great game.
In the narrative adventure game, we’ll experience a story between Reverie and the real world as a young woman named Polly.
The most striking aspect of Harmony, where you can see into the future through time travel and make decisions that change the outcomes accordingly, is the great-looking hand-drawn graphics, which I’m a big fan of.
Octopath Traveler 2
Release Date: 24th February 2023
If you loved the first Octopath Traveler as much as I did then you’re in for a real surprise. The sequel’s fantastic. I’ve been looking forward to playing the sequel for ages. In the second game, which remains completely faithful to the original, we’ll follow the story of eight different travelers.
Square Enix is the developer of Octopath Traveler, so you know it should be a good game! It’ll be released on 24th February 2023. Indeed, this series also carries the spirit of Final Fantasy at its core. The turn-based battle system may not be very exciting these days, but you should definitely give it a try.
I absolutely love the art style of this game, it’s one I’m absolutely thrilled to see available on the Switch. It’s available on Amazon or Nintendo store, hit the button below to check it out.
