movie_posterHey all, I’m back with a rock musical film for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s Rock of Ages.

Plot: The plot follows a couple of newcomers to the rock music scene of Los Angeles in 1987. Honestly, the movie isn’t that great, but it did have the seventh highest opening ever for a film musical before its eventual disappointing sales at the box office. This movie had way too many cliches for me to really enjoy, and the casting felt uninspired.

Casting: Tom Cruise stars as rock icon Stacee Jaxx in the film. While he does a good job, it wasn’t enough to save this film from bombing at the box office. The movie also stars Julianne Hough (as Sherrie Christian) and Diego Boneta (as Drew Boley) as two aspiring young singers who hope to make it in the music business.

Cinematography: The special effects aren’t amazing or particularly noteworthy, but the film at least looked decent. But this wasn’t enough to save the film in my opinion.

Music: The music was pretty good though with multiple rock greats contributing their songs. The soundtrack was even nominated for a Grammy.

Overall: You will probably want to skip this movie unless you really enjoy rock musicals or movies starring Tom Cruise.

For those who like: Musicals, Rock, Drama, and Tom Cruise.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
