In any new open world game, it’s quite frustrating when you can’t explore everything right off the bat. Leveling up and getting access to more and more areas is obviously a part of the games gameplay design.
There are plenty of locked doors in Hogwarts Legacy, here’s a video on how to open them. More detailed numbered instructions are below.
- Complete ‘The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament’ quest.
- Head to restricted section of the castle.
- Collect two Demiguise Moon statues.
- Get access to Alohomora.
- Go to locked door.
- Cast Alohomora.
- Complete lock-picking mini game.

How To Unlock Doors In Hogwarts Legacy
It’s super easy to unlock doors in Hogwarts Legacy, once you know how that is. All you need to do is to learn the Alohomora spell. This spell can be picked up by completing ‘The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament’ quest that’s available once you’ve completed enough of the main story. I played for around 8 or 9 hours before I was able to do the quest.
You’ll be contacted by Gladwin Moon via an owl. You’ll be asked to make your way into a restricted area of the castle at night to collect two Demiguise Moon statues. After collecting the statues, as your reward, you’ll be granted the Alohomora spell.

Remember though, completing ‘The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament’ gives you access to all the level 1 locked doors in Hogwarts Legacy. To access doors that are above level one, you’ll be required to upgrade your Alohomora spell.
Once you’ve acquired the spell it’s time to actually unlock the door, you can do this via a cool mini game. This mini game, at first glance looks to be really quite complicated. But, in reality, it’s not at all. Thankfully, it’s really easy, once you get the hang of it.
The goal of the lock-picking mini game is getting both gears to spinning at the same time. A tip I learnt is to focus on the outside ring first. This’ll help you find the correct location by slowly moving the lock until it begins to move. Once you’ve done that, move onto the outside ring.
It’s pretty frustrating at first because the game doesn’t exactly show or tell you what to do. But, it’s pretty simple.
If you’re using a controller the left analog stick spins the green outer wheel and the right stick spins the inner red wheel.
You need to rotate either one of those wheels until you see the inner gear move. If you’re spinning the red inner wheel, you’ll eventually see the little red gear in the centre barely move.
You just need to find the spot you where at when it moved and then stop on it. Once you find it you have to hold the analog stick there and now spin the other gear.
You’ll see the gear at the bottom right wiggle slightly. Rotate back to where you were when it moved and stay there.
Basically, spin a wheel until the gear moves a slight little turn and then stop there by slowly spinning back to where it gave you some movement until the gear moves and lights up.
You’ve essentially got to find the ‘sweet spot’. Do that and the door will open. Once you’ve learnt how to unlock doors at Hogwarts, you’ll get access to secrets rewards and treasure.
