It's probably not worth the hassle for a solo indie. It is much better than the boring shot reverse-shot cutscene stuff going on in AAA RPGs these days, and makes Skyrim's "sit" mechanic more meaningful. Sit and listen. Whenever an NPC is about to dump backstory and exposition on you, they'll ask you to take a seat. Money sink.

Although these lines are increasingly blurred today (as AAA cRPGs will tend to draw heavily from both traditions), there is a clear historical period after the Ultima - Wizardry split that dominates more than two decades of cRPG design. It is the model that all contemporary open world games follow.

We don’t see this often enough in casual simulation games, but there is a lovely open-world feel to this game. Originally launched back in 2019, Dicey Dungeons was an immediate hit indie game. I completed the main campaign in Redfall ( official site, Steam , also on Game Pass), a 4 player co-op open world shooter by Arkane Austin, who's mostly known for detailed single player story-filled action games. There are two open world regions, Redfall Commons and Burial Point. OK you get the idea. Let's zoom out.

Still, overall this was a very impressive achievement for just 3 indie developers. Even AAA has given up on immersive sim RPGs , so any dev deserves praise just for attempting this genre I think. Crime in Skyrim has relatively few consequences, and this was a mod that suddenly raised the stakes in the middle of your Skyrim playthrough.
