Godot 4.0 optimization progress report

Mircosoft Game Dev

As most of the rendering features for the upcoming Godot 4.0 are done, I have spent the past two months optimizing the rendering engine, both on the CPU and GPU side. All this work has resulted in significantly faster rendering times. CPU Optimization. Before getting into the GPU side, several optimizations have been done on the CPU side: Culling is now done in a brute-force way which is extremely cache efficient.

Radiator Blog

all drawings by Eleanor Davis "We Dwell in Possibility" (WeDIP) is a new queer gardening simulation game about planting bodies and ideas, and watching them grow into a kinetic landscape. You can currently play it in your browser on the Manchester International Festival's (MIF's) "Virtual Factory" website. The game should take about 5-10 minutes to play.

7000 Signatures later.

Grumpy Gamer

Last month I finally got done signing over 7000 cards for the Limited Run Games physical release of Monkey Island. They asked if I would hand sign cards to go in the boxes. Sure, how many can that be? 500? 800? Nope. They had over 7000 preorders and I signed every one of those cards. If you bought one of the LRG Monkey Island boxes you won't get a Certificate of Authenticity with a crappy machine printed signature.

Ownership: How Virtual Worlds Work, part 5

Raph Koster

L et’s get one thing out of the way first. Ownership of anything digital is illusory, and always will be. How Virtual Worlds Work. 1: Clients, servers, and art. 2: Maps. 3: Object templates and instances. 4: Object behaviors. 5: Ownership. Then again, it’s illusory in the real world, too. Ownership is a convention , not physical reality. This is why we have sayings like “Possession is nine-tenths of the law,” which basically means “you can claim you own something all you want, but if you don’t p

A day in the life of a narrative designer

Game Global

What is Narrative Design? When you imagine doing this job, is it mostly about crafting amazing cutscenes? Beautiful shots of heartfelt dialogue, with characters saying a great deal by speaking a few carefully chosen words? Do you want to make people laugh at the silly things the game’s troops say if you click on them enough times? If so, you probably want to be a game writer.

Cryptocurrency, NFTs and pay-to-earn: the new world or a gigantic Ponzi scam?

Gamesbrief

Twice in my career, I have been at the forefront of massive change. In 2000 , I was an Internet analyst at Deutsche Bank advising middle-aged men (and they were all men) on how this new nerdy Internet thing was going to change the world. It was three months before the dotcom crash. Valuations were stratospheric. It was possible to believe, as I did, that the Internet was a fundamental change to how the world worked AND that the majority of stocks were overvalued.

Early one morning, a dragon was running through the town center, jumping over the puddles of water and burping nervously. Big round eyes and a large smile covered his face. Pilipili was late for an important mission.

There was a lot of fun entries and that inspired some of the level names.
