Open world RPG design notes from Enderal, a big long Skyrim mod

This is a convenient diegetic way of locking the player in-place for a cutscene, while also priming the player for an extended cutscene. It is much better than the boring shot reverse-shot cutscene stuff going on in AAA RPGs these days, and makes Skyrim's "sit" mechanic more meaningful. It's more paranoid than a Ubisoft game.

If you want to have an enormous open world, some copy-pasting will be necessary, even for games with huge budgets. Each time you find a “Geoglyph," you watch a cutscene which shows a sliver of what happened to Zelda. Problem #3: Key Character Cutscenes Are Too Similar The story of Z:TotK is a mixed bag for me.

I completed the main campaign in Redfall ( official site, Steam , also on Game Pass), a 4 player co-op open world shooter by Arkane Austin, who's mostly known for detailed single player story-filled action games. There are two open world regions, Redfall Commons and Burial Point. But not really. OK you get the idea.

If you follow that link, you’ll see open world events occurring as the quest proceeds, done without zone or quest locking, etc. And the biggest reason why the themepark line has dominated is because it tackles mostly solved problems, compared to building a true alternate world. These were absolutely “rides” the player went on.
