These 4 musicians make games based on their impromptu performances

PreMortem.Games

Kyon Edelenbosch, Mark Lohmann, Matteo Karkazis and Mark Benis are not your typical game developers. They call themselves Bonte Avond , ‘a game studio of 4 musicians who make bizarre, funny and heartfelt games’. The name of their studio is based on a typically Dutch custom. ‘Bonte Avond’ is the last night of (summer)camp where guests perform humorous plays or songs for each other.

A common talking point among game critics is in the game devs’ visions and if it was compromised in some way. What do you feel constitutes the developers vision as talked about by game hobbyists?

Ask a Game Dev

I think “the developers vision, as talked about by game hobbyists” usually means whatever the particular game hobbyist likes or believes in most. To my knowledge, humans don’t really have the ability to read other humans’ minds with any accuracy, so actually knowing what the dev team’s vision was during development is essentially impossible for those on the outside.

Hi, I´m currently implementing keyboard input for my game engine. For communication with the X Server (Ubuntu,Linux) I use xlib with the XKB extension. As far as I understand it the keyboard sends a hardware dependent scancode which gets somehow transformed into a device independent keycode (i guess via evdev ?).

Want to make a great game trailer? 3 is the magic number

PreMortem.Games

Top image: Dead Cells by Motion Twin. Why? Great game and great trailer ! How many times do you need to show a hooky idea or game mechanic in a trailer for people to understand it? My general rule is at least twice, but no more than three. The reason it’s good to show something 2-3 times is firstly because if you only show it once, the person watching might miss it entirely and if you never show it again they could be missing out on a key game mechanic.

Usually I am working solo but I am going to work in a studio as game designer and I would like to make good design documents for the team. So what does a design document for a feature/puzzle/challenge etc look like? What information should I include? And thank you for sharing your answers to all these questions we ask!

Ask a Game Dev

Remember, the goal when writing a design document is to help provide a road map for the feature or system you’re working on. You need to explain to the readers what you are building, why you are building it, and what you need in order to build it. When I write a design document, I usually try to address the following: High level goal - What is this feature/system/puzzle/etc. supposed to do?
