Fan Collective Unimatrix 47: Star Trek Prodigy’s “Masquerade” Episode

Game Industry News

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS. I have to confess, I wasn’t expecting where Prodigy decided to go with Dal R’El, but I think it works really well, given what Prodigy is all about, thematically speaking. Star Trek has long been a franchise characterized by found family, but Prodigy has made it a little more explicit. Zero finds his collective. Gwyn chooses her own family, and now, Dal must face that his crew is his family in a much more literal sense.

Perform Metamorphic Testing for ML-based System With QASource

Rocket Brush Studio

Machine Learning based systems have potentially huge input spaces with probabilistic outcomes from ML models. To test such probabilistic systems, Metamorphic testing is used to describe the system functionality in terms of generic relations between inputs, the generic transformations of those inputs and their outputs, rather than as mappings of specific inputs to specific outputs.

So… is there even a point to buying physical discs anymore, especially for the purposes of preservation and keeping an inalienable collection? If all discs do is set up a download, when the servers go dark, your options for playing that game get severely curtailed. If not, are the options for preservation fully out of the layman’s hands, or are there things regular folks like me can do to keep games available outside of corporate whims?

Ask a Game Dev

Not all of them do this, but many of them do now. It’s been this way for a long time already. Games today get patches quite regularly. Console certification even has a “conditional pass” result where the submitted version of the game passes cert, but requires the publisher to submit a day 1 patch to fix a bunch of additional issues (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077, where they actually failed cert on their day 1 patch, leading to a post-gold delay).

Is it anyway possible for content being made from the base game to be cut by some outside reason then held back without any additional development work then be sold god-knows how long later down the line? Doesn’t sound fundamentally feasible to me, but I see that rhetoric topic all the time on a game I know of.

Ask a Game Dev

Nah, it isn’t possible. The act of cutting content requires us not just to remove the cut content itself, but we also need to clean up all existing connections to that cut content so that the game doesn’t break due to missing assets. This means that re-adding the content later will require us to create a bunch of new connections to the game to make the content connect with the greater whole that is the game.

D2 log 071 – Sokol

I’m porting my rendering code from OpenGL to the Sokol library. Sokol has a very nice low-level 3D API with multiple rendering backends (GL/Metal/D3D). Combined with the accompanying shader cross-compiler it’s a lot easier to experiment with new rendering techniques and shaders. Still work in progress but I’ve done proof of concept tests for all major components of the game and everything seems to be OK.
